1)
Addressing the need to increase COLLECTIVE MEMORY:
When a place shows traces of community engagement and potential
development, it becomes the duty of care of those who regenerate
the area to utilise the existing community structures to nourish
this potential further. This does not mean a top-down approach
but rather a bottom-up approach, enabling the locals to take
ownership.
2)
Addressing the LACK OF CENTRE(S):
To encourage community/cultural development we need to create
potential environments where collective memory can be shared.
These environments need to be both informal and formal as well
as public in nature. The youth have appropriated some of the
existing public spaces. These spaces become their localised
places of exchange, while the adults are left with even less
appropriate place of informal exchange.
3)
Addressing the need to reduce DIVIDED COMMUNITIES:
This is an issue which needs to be tackled both physically (in
terms of places of gathering) and socially (through collective
events at the village). The physical aspect is partly tackled
by the previous topic - lack of a centre. It is important that
new locations are identified by the local community for both
formal and informal events. Collective events organised by the
local community can range from being pleasure orientated to
community development programs or mixed. These events can potentially
be arranged by the youth for themselves or the town. The BARBECUBE
offered to Purfleet by public works for a period of time (to
be discussed) becomes a tool or a vehicle where these events
can take place.
4)
Assessing ERASURES AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS:
1) Do the structures being erased contribute to the existing
and present community development? If so, how?
2) How much of the site(s) being developed become closed off
to the public?
3) It is important to note that mere public access to certain
areas of sites
being developed is not enough, only if the public access leads
to a usable public domain. This can be enclosed or open. How
is this achieved?
4)How does the new development fit into the cultural strategy
for Purfleet?
5) How can the beneficial aspects of what is being erased
be transformed and reappropriated into parts of the new developments?
